Improvement Engineer – Stade, Germany. 

Job Overview

The Improvement Specialist will work as a member of the plant optimization team in the Chlor-Alkali plants in Stade. These plants are world class facilities with state of the art technology and a leading competitive position within the global Chlor Alkali plants. The incumbent will apply technical skills for optimization of plant operations, implement improvement projects and participate in plant programs (Environmental, Health & Safety, etc.).  Plant level improvement capital- and non- capital projects are aligned with the Plant Specific Technology Plan and long-term Business and Site strategies.

The successful candidate will be expected to work closely with the Production Leader, area Production Engineers and -Technologists for both project identification and project implementation.  He/she will work with the Global Improvement Leader in the overall Chlor-Alkali project prioritization to ensure that the highest value projects are advanced forward.

The incumbent will report administratively and functionally to the Global Improvement Leader who is located in Stade.

The Key Job Responsibilities

  • Provide plant data for global gap analysis and identification of plant-level improvement
  • opportunities (from plant, business, and technology resources).
  • Identify opportunities and prioritize from a plant perspective.
  • Help validate improvement opportunities and assist in building the Plant Specific Technology Plan.
  • Implement projects as identified in the Plant Specific Technology Plan either as Manufacturing
  • Representative or Project Manager.
  • Serve as project leader to complete identified projects of the Plant Specific Technology Plan with in-depth knowledge of statistical data analysis.
  • Participate in EH&S projects such as LOPA (Layer of Protection Analysis) and LPP (Loss Prevention Principles) Compliance.
  • Assist the Run Plant team by sharing assignments during high work load periods

Education/Certification Requirements:

Bachelor of Science or Master Degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering. Other Engineering disciplines will be considered if the candidate has significant project engineering/project management experience in a chemical plant environment.

  • Fresh graduates from Universities are encouraged to apply.
  • No routine travel required.
  • Work closely with operations and will be part of department On Call schedule.
  • Fluency in German and English is a must.

Job role goals

  • Ensure safe, reliable production of Chlor-Alkali products to meet Business requirements.
  • Identify opportunities that will reduce cost and/or improve plant performance (specifically Asset Utilization and manufacturing costs).
  • Implement assigned projects on time, within budget and following the Dow Global Project Methodology
  • Identify and implement MET (Most Effective Technology) in specific plant areas or unit operations.
  • Develop projects and programs that support the implementation of the Business Improvement Plan.
  • Coordinate/implement/complete specific small capital and expense projects that reduce costs and/or improve asset utilization.

Production Engineer – Stade, Bomlitz, Boehlen – Germany

As Production Engineer, you will be a vital resource for Operations by applying your technical expertise to optimize plant operations, resolve plant problems, and enable safe and efficient production of quality products.

Aligned with Energy Business objectives, the Associate Production Manager responsibly coordinates day-to-day operations around production under the direction of the Production Leader in collaboration with Plant, Maintenance and CIRE/Tech Center personnel as a technical resource and provides technical knowledge and experience to Plant Operations and Maintenance personnel to ensure safe and efficient plant operations, continue to improve them, resolve technical issues and implement MET.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure compliance with the Permit and DOW EH&S standards and programs during daily operations and plant improvements.
  • Works closely with plant operations, maintenance and technology personnel on a daily basis to operate the process safely, reliably and economically to achieve Energy Business goals, improve key plant parameters (EH&S, quality, productivity, cost, energy efficiency, waste efficiency, etc.) and assist plant personnel in problem solving.
  • Analyzes, understands and improves the production process, process engineering equipment and process control system (ABB x800, Siemens PCS7).
  • Develops technical optimization strategies in collaboration with the CIRE organization and participates in the implementation of the technology plan.
  • Training of the plant operating personnel (e.g. new technologies, work instructions)
  • Ensures Operating Discipline procedures are in place, initiates changes, and works with plant operators to ensure they are up to date and valid
  • Performs Root Cause Analysis (RCA) in the event of production losses and operational disruptions and initiates corrective actions based on RCA’s or changes in operating procedures
  • Performs the duties of a ‘Manufacturing Representative’ in accordance with Global Project Methodology (GPM).
  • Communicates technical and operational procedures with plant personnel, Tech Center, technical committees in the plant and business unit.
  • Maintains contact with customer plants and responds to customer and business inquiries.
  • Implements Six Sigma methodology to achieve technical improvements.
  • Leads relevant EH&S activities and achieves appropriate EH&S improvements.
  • Compiles data and descriptions required for optimization and subsequent measurability and prepares authorities reports (reporting).
  • Is responsible for production planning in close collaboration with Site Integration.
  • Manages supply and service contracts in close collaboration with Commercial Energy Management.
  • Supports Dow Service Business with requests to locate / expand production facilities from I-Park partners.

Knowledge and experiences:

  • Completed scientific engineering education (UAS/University).
  • Knowledge of engineering, chemical technical processes, and their process control systems.
  • Knowledge of plant operation
  • Knowledge of EH&S
  • Knowledge of all internal and external safety-related guidelines and laws (e.g. UVV, SSV, environmental protection)
  • Knowledge of quality assurance systems and methods
  • Knowledge of Six Sigma methodology
  • Fluent in English and German
  • Proficient in the use of relevant PC software
  • Very good communication skills
